This course aims to enhance your knowledge of health promotion and disease prevention when working with patients with cancer. You will learn the foundational concepts that led to the evolution of health promotion as it is viewed today. By exploring the theoretical basis of health promotion, you will have a greater appreciation and understanding of population health, the social determinants of health, and primary care. The types of prevention, and risk reduction strategies will also be reinforced. Cancer screening is provided either through an opportunistic or population-based approach.
In this course, key distinctions will be made between the approaches, and the recommendations for your clients in practice. Furthermore, survivorship is becoming an important topic area that needs to be addressed in our practice setting given the fact that patients with cancer are living longer, and we need to ensure that we provide valuable health promotion and prevention patient education. Recognizing the increased use of complementary and alternative medicine by patients with cancer is also an important area that will be addressed in this course. Finally, the principles of health behavior change and the basics of motivational interviewing will provide some concrete skill development essential to assisting you to support clients. This will enable you to have an opportunity to practice your skills and evaluate the effectiveness of one motivational interview method.
